Game, Age and Match: Sports In The Cavern

This is the story of how the Football Game Cup and the Water Polo Game Cup were made into reality by [X], Stone and Mister Magic...

In the past, or as far as I care to remember, as I've only been in MOULa for some three years, there haven't been too many sporting events that anybody could participate in. I know I've suggested, and perhaps others too, things like the "D'ni'piads": Olympic Games in D'ni style, or any other such activities. It seems to be difficult to get people gathered for a common event of this kind. An odd door run can be made on the spot, but planning something bigger and grander is more tricky. It takes somebody with determination and stubborness to pull it through!

In 2012, there was discussion on the Guild of Writers' forum about a Soccer or Croquet field on which Karkadann was working. And in November, there was an image of that field layed out in Minkata. That image created the initial spark. Stone had already been working on a script of his own for a month  when [X] (aka Kaaja) approached him with the idea of making a Football field. Luckily, his project could be adapted as a base for this new idea. After about a week of tweaking that and reworking the Age, a series of test matches commenced.

Minkata made into a Croquet field.Lire la suite

This Month in the Cavern - March/April 2013

It's time for our Monthly Column again, this time for March and the first part of April. This will cover the DMR Q&A event with Jack Wall, as well as the St. Patrick's Day celebrations in the Cavern. It also has a summary of the second Water Polo Game, the Cup consisting of five games in total.

(To be able to continue publishing this, we of course need the community's support! To report about events, news and what's happening in the Cavern.)Lire la suite

An Interview With Robyn Miller (Part 2)

Editor's Note: This is the second part of the D'ni Musicological Research Hood's interview with Myst co-creator Robyn Miller.  To read the first part, follow this link.  For the original recording of this interview (which we recommend listening to while you read), click here.

Planetary (Pl): Okay, and we’re back. And if anyone’s just joining us, this is the DMR, and we’re here with Mouski and Christine, and our special guest tonight, Mr. Robyn Miller. And I’m Planetary. We’ve been listening to some music from Riven there, and Mouski, you had some other questions that were interesting, as well as Christine. You wanted to ask something as well, too.

Mouski (Mo): Yeah, when the music was playing I asked Robyn: if he had to go back and play a character in Myst again, would he choose Sirrus or Achenar?

Robyn Miller (RM): And I said, don’t even go there. [laughs] Don’t ask those kinds of questions.

Mo: And you also had something to say about the music in Myst, how long did it take you to compose it?Lire la suite

This Month in the Cavern - February/March 2013

A Note From The Guild

This is a test of a new feature for the online version of The Cavern Post, similar to "What Happened In..." written by Nev'yn for the former version of the magazine: a monthly column. Specifically, it will be an overview of the different events and things that have happened the past month down in the cavern. We would like to publish this the week after the monthly All Guilds Meeting, so in general, around the first half of a month.

This time, we'll be leaving the reporting up to you, the average explorer.  We'll need the community's support to report about events, news and what's happening in the cavern. In this case, no contributors, no column. It's as simple as that.

To kick this off, here's a brief account of some of the things that happened during February and  March 2013.

MOULa's Third Anniversary: We can't forget the fact that, at the start of this february, MOULa has been online for three years!Lire la suite

An Interview With Robyn Miller (Part 1)

The D'ni Musicological Research Hood had a very special treat for all of us Myst and URU fans on Friday, the 8th of February: They invited Robyn Miller for a Q&A and a discussion about the Myst games series and his part in creating them and also to discuss his other projects.

Robyn is the brother of Rand Miller and Ryan Miller, a co-founder of the game company Cyan, Inc. (now Cyan Worlds, Inc.), and the man who played Sirrus in the original Myst. He created the music for both Myst and Riven: The Sequel To Myst and has continued his career well beyond the world of D'ni.

In this interview, Robyn reflects on Myst and Riven, especially his "drive" in the creation of the games.  He chats about the creative process when composing the scores for both games and the tools he used, as well as the technical limitations he, Rand and the rest had to deal with at that time.Lire la suite

A Journey Without an Ending: Part 3 - The Ending Has Not Yet Been Written

Disclaimer: This series of articles is written in-character (IC) and are mainly based on known facts or research. Although Max has taken some liberties or "artistic license" in some parts, like in adapting or intertwining the gameplay or the fiction into facts of reality, the article has been fact-checked by others in the GoMe and in most aspects is, to the best of our knowledge, factually accurate.

We learned in the first part of this series how John Loftin and Elias Zandi made their first expedition to D'ni in 1988 utilizing lava tunnels located in the desert in New Mexico. During later expeditions, they managed to explore the cavern and get their first glimpses of the D'ni culture and history.

In the second part, we learned how the D'ni Restoration Council (DRC) was eventually founded after Elias Zandi passed away, leaving the property to his son Jeff Zandi, while he left his vast fortune to the members of the DRC to continue the restoration. By the end of 1997, the DRC had established themselves in the cavern on permanent basis, overseeing the restoration and further exploring the D'ni and the different Ages.Lire la suite

Age Comparisons - K'veer

In this article I am going to compare K'veer between the versions in Myst Online: Uru Live Again (MOULa) and Myst V: End Of Ages.

  • NOTE: Myst V: End Of Ages on the left, MOULa on the right

When you start your game in Myst V, you start in the upper room in K'veer surrounded by metal doors, all of which are closed.  With you in the room are a number of Bahro, which soon disappear upon your arrival, leaving you alone.  You notice the room is shaking as the lamps are swinging and there are periodic earthquakes.  What is missing from the centre of the room, which is in MOULa, is the pedestal with the linking book to Myst Library on it.  You'll also notice the walls are brighter in Myst V and rock above the doors is darker and more pronounced in MOULa.  The floor pattern is also different.  This room appears in other games as well, namely Myst and Riven, with Atrus sitting at the desk.Lire la suite

A Journey Without An Ending: Part 2 - The Journey Continues

Disclaimer: This series of articles is written in-character (IC) and are mainly based on known facts or research. Although Max has taken some liberties or "artistic license" in some parts, like in adapting or intertwining the gameplay or the fiction into facts of reality, the article has been fact-checked by others in the GoMe and in most aspects is, to the best of our knowledge, factually accurate.

In Part 1, we learned how John Loftin discovered an entrance to the large cavern known as D'ni and how Elias Zandi and Loftin made their first expeditions down the lava tunnels.  Later, during a more than three-week-long expedition, they were accompanied by Dr. Richard A. Watson as the third member of their group of explorers. On that trip down to the cavern in the summer of 1991, John Loftin lost his life in a tragic accident that left the other two absolutely devastated. Despite this enormous setback and loss of life, Zandi and Watson were still determined to carry on and explore further what their late companion had discovered.

They had also started to work on the writings they had brought with them back to the surface; specifically, attempting to translate what, to their knowledge at the time, was a dead language.  In the latter part of 1991, they were finally able to translate some journals written by a young woman known as  Katran  or Catherine (she had been called both, apparently due to a mispronunciation by her husband).  Elias had also in correspondence with  Rand  and Robyn Miller told them about the group's progress and kept them updated on their findings.   Lire la suite

A Journey Without An Ending: Part 1 - Where It All Started

Disclaimer: This series of articles is written in-character (IC) and are mainly based on known facts or research. Although Max has taken some liberties or "artistic license" in some parts, like in adapting or intertwining the gameplay or the fiction into facts of reality, the article has been fact-checked by others in the GoMe and in most aspects is, to the best of our knowledge, factually accurate.

Just like many others making the Journey, I've been amazed by what I've seen and experienced. Many explorers still find their way down to the cavern and the magic world of the D'ni culture, visting the Ages and the remains of a once great underground city. So it might be interesting for all those newcomers, and perhaps also for old "veteran explorers" of the Cavern as well, to try and recapture how this all came about.

On one of my several trips down to the cavern a few years ago, I happened to ask Jeff Zandi if he'd like to tell me a bit about the discovery of the city and the D'ni inhabitats.  By then, I had already mentioned to him about my visits to some European caves and about my writings for some magazines; we shared the same interest for archeology. With a bit of persuasion, this genuinely nice fellow finally agreed.Lire la suite

Interview de Ryan Miller

Par AaronAKAAtrus and Doobes

Note de la Guilde : Cette interview a été réalisée il y a plus d'un an par AaronAKAAtrus. Une partie de cet article a été rédigé par ses soins. Suite à l'annulation de GO!
