Ok guys! It's time to start. :)
I'm going to summarise the rules for the elections of Council Members.
So. If I want to do an introduction I probably should say what is the current structure of the GoMe, luckily we have our Guild Books with all the Documentation of it
:
What is the structure of the GoMe
Basically, the only two positions open for elections are the two GuildMasters (I'll use this word for lack of a better one). All the other positions follow different processes and are not touched by these elections.
The Elections are done in two steps:
1.Nominations
2.Voting
Nominations
I will open a new thread for the nomination of the canditates.
First problem: How long should be the nominations? I suggest one week, anyone has better ideas? 10 Days
There are two ways to nominate a Messenger for the elections:
- Messenger A nominates himself and then at least another Messenger nominates him.
- Or the other way around: Messenger A nominates Messenger B and then Messenger B nominates himself.
In this way we put some barriers to electing someone who doesn't want to be elected (that happened with Lynnutte) or electing someone who is not wanted as Guild Master by the other Messengers (loose barrier, but our group is still small)
Once the nomination period is over we will start the real voting.
Voting
The voting process will be done manually (by email) by an external person, a non-Messenger. For this election Doobes volunteered to help us.
Each Messenger can vote for one candidate and the two who receive more votes will be elected GMs of the Guild. If there are only 2 candidates there will be no need for voting, but at least this time we'll know that the GMs are trusted by someone (not what happened with me and Theremin).
The candidates can vote, if they want, but they can't vote for themselves.
Second Problem: How much should the voting phase last? I would say 1 week. 10 Days.
The email address for sending the votes (NOT the nominations, only the votes) is: gomeelect2011[at]gmail[dot]com
In the emails sent to Doobes you must include your: GoMe Forum Name, MOULa avatar name (just to be sure XD) and of course the name of the candidate you chose.
I think I have included everything. If there is nothing you have doubts on, and unless you don't find a big bug in the process, I'll start the nomination process tomorrow. (just in time for Marten to come back! Even if we know he doesn't want to be elected :P)
I would suggest two weeks(for both processess) instead of one, that seems short. But for the rest it sounds okay :)
You mean 2 weeks in total, right? that's what I meant too XD
You mean 2 weeks in total, right? that's what I meant too XD
I meant two weeks for the voting and two weeks for the aplying/whatever. Okay, maybe the other way around :P
oh I see....Isn't it too long?
Wouldn't a week be too short?
Length of voting-
I would say one week for nominations and one week for voting, because my feeling is someone who is only checking the forums every couple of weeks or less is probably not very active in the Guild. Understandably, I was out unexpectedly recently for almost a week, and these things will happen. we could compromise- say 10 days each if everyone feels strongly about it.
I'm not sure I agree with the rule of not allowing a candidate to vote for themselves. If we are holding a "free" election, each Messenger should have the right to vote for whomever they choose. It sounds too much like ballot-box stuffing to me.
I have PMed many messengers just some minutes ago ;)
10 days can be fine
eheh, theremin I know you didn't like this method XD
voting for oneself: the thing is that we are not playing with large numbers here. Wouldn't it feel bad if one would win by one vote because he voted for himself? I would agree with you if we were playing with large numbers, but with little numbers one vote has more weight over the final result
I think folks ought to be allowed to vote for themselves - then the votes really will reflect who is most wanted. :-) For example:
If person "A" and person "B" are both running, and person "A" can't vote for himself so he votes for person "B", and person "B" can't vote for herself so she votes for person "C" - and everyone else votes as follows: 4 = "A", 4 = "B", 3 = "C"...(follow all that?) then the results are that person B wins because person A voted for her rather than himself - the person he really wanted to vote for. Small numbers of voters would be all the MORE reason why everyone should be allowed to vote for the person tney think is the best candidate (even if it IS themselves).
I like the 10 day stretch as it will allow for anyone taking a week's vacation away from computer-ville. :-)

I still don't agree with telling someone they have to vote a certain way, either "you must vote for this person" or "you can't vote for this person", regardless of the numbers of voters. If I nominate you and you accept, this tells me you are confident in your ability to fill the position, and thus have in a sense already voted for yourself. Likewise, I would object to telling the candidates they couldn't vote, because they would automatically have their vote applied to themselves. As Julee demonstrated, by restricting votes, you can unfairly stack the election.
I'm only here because I rec'd an e-mail which let me know I had a PM regarding this topic. I've been an absentee member of the guild for a long time, now. But, I do like to stay informed of the guild's work and I am a big supporter of all the wonderful work done by others in the guild. So, should I still participate in this process?
I would suggest nominations go with people nominating someone, and them nominating themselves as an "acceptance" =)
I'd also suggest nominations go for a week, and voting also goes for a week. =)
@Tai: yes I think you should :) You have done a nice job when we needed you for communications with the GoG, although recently there haven't been much communication with them.
@Kaelis: it is exactly how it works right now.
@Theremin and Julee: ok you have convinced me. Made corrections to the first post.
@Theremin and Julee: ok you have convinced me. Made corrections to the first post.
Thanks Leo! :)
@Tai'lahr- I think by the very fact that you read and responded to the post at least shows you're still interested if not heavily involved, and so I would not have a problem with you participating in the election.
very good. Then I'm going to open the first part of the elections ^^
errr... there are some people I'd like to nominate, but it occurs to me- should there be a limit on the number of nominations a single person can make? I'm not sure either way.
Also- what happens if I were to nominate someone, they accept, and then for whatever reason I withdraw my nomination?
No I don't think there should be a limit to the nominations.
Withdrawing is not expected....I think that those are the special cases that can be taken care of with a 'case by case' approach, i.e. we will decide when it happens
We are done for the Nominations!
This first process brought these Messengers to be candidates for the elections:
- White
- Lunanne
- Leonardo
And so we are ready to start voting! You will find the email address to which you can send your vote and all the rules in the first post.
Let the Second Phase Begin: Voting!
Wheee, voted. =)
First batch of votes has been counted. So far, so good! Keep 'em coming.
EDIT 1/28: More votes counted. Please remember you may only vote for ONE candidate. Keep sending those votes, people! Every one counts! :)
EDIT 2/4: Still plenty of time to vote if you haven't gotten around to it yet. I will be accepting votes until midnight Sunday USA Central time, with results posted the next day.
Hem hem, brief personal announcement.
Due to an unexpected series of events that have significantly and permanently changed my life, I'll be lucky if I get enough time to do my regular guild work (translation, personnel management, magazine distribution 'n' stuff). That means that a would be a really bad GM. As there is no mechanism intended to draw back nominations (plus I don't want to make things more complicated for Doobes), I hereby announce that in the unlikely case that I'm elected, I shall resign very quickly, triggering a new election. Perhaps I should say that I mainly accepted Leo's nomination in order to not disappoint him. ^^
If anybody has not voted yet and intended to vote for me, I suggest they give their vote to Leonardo. That's where mine went and I think that's a good place for it.
Thanks for your understanding.
And I just realized that this kind of officializes Leonardo and Lunanne as the new Guild Council! I must say that I'm really glad about this choice (not just because I like allitterations) and wish the two of you (prematurely) buckets of strength to perform this task.
/clap
And the polls are closed! By popular vote, your new Guild Masters are: Leonardo and Lunanne! Congratulations to you both and a big thank you to all that voted!
YAY!!!! Congrats Luna!!!
Welcome to the Council!
(Bye Theremin!)
Btw how many Messengers voted? Can we have the percentage of votes for each Candidate?
(Bye Theremin!)
(Leo no like me, he excited I'm gone!
)
Congratulations to the both of you!
Awwwww poor Theremin XD
No, I'm not excited you are gone, just happy elections are over
Btw how many Messengers voted? Can we have the percentage of votes for each Candidate?
Ah, certainly! 11 Messengers voted in the election, and here are the percentages for each candidate:
Leonardo: 6 votes - 55 %
Lunanne: 4 votes - 36 %
White: 1 vote - 9%
